Mischa Kuball uses the medium of light – in installations and photography- to explore the social and political parameters of space and place. “Space-Speech-Speed” references sites for dance, music and trance with mirror balls and introduces the language through light with the intention to disorient the viewer.
Mischa Kuball has been working in the public and institutional sphere since 1984. In his installations and photographs he uses light as a medium to explore architectural spaces as well as social and political discourses. He reflects on a whole variety of aspects from sociocultural structures to architectural interventions as well as emphasising or reinterpreting their monumental nature and context in architectural history. Public and private space merge into an indistinguishable whole in politically motivated participation projects, providing a platform for communication between the audience, the artist, the work itself and public space.
Since 2007 Mischa Kuball has been a Professor for public art at the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne, and associate professor for media art at Hochschule für Gestaltung/ZKM, Karlsruhe. Since 2015 he has been a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts, Duesseldorf. In 2016 he was honoured with the German Light Award.
This work is being presented at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia within the context of the international Light Art Project, RESPONSIVE.
RESPONSIVE: International Light Art Project Halifax, will be exhibiting this year in Halifax, Nova Scotia from October 18 to 21, 2017.
RESPONSIVE is a new international light art curatorial collaboration project between Halifax and Cologne, Germany. This special four-day exhibition will showcase the medium of light through interactive, responsive and performative artworks. Using projections, digital media, televisions, fluorescents and neons, select sites throughout downtown Halifax will be illuminated with innovative light art compositions. The RESPONSIVE art bridge between Halifax and Cologne has been created by the founding Halifax partners and Project Co-‐Curators, Melanie Colosimo (Director of Anna Leonowens Gallery at NSCAD University), Sarah Fillmore (Chief Curator of Art Gallery of Nova Scotia) and Peter Dykhuis (Director of Dalhousie Art Gallery at Dalhousie University), with founding Cologne partners, Project Initiator and Director, Dr. Ralf Seippel (Director of Seippel Galerie) and Artistic Director, Professor Bettina Pelz (curator). Together, this curatorial collective has organized an exciting roster of international exhibiting artists from United States, North Africa, Germany, Russia and Japan; including Norimichi Hirakawa, Mischa Kuball, Kurt Laurenz Theinert and artistic duos Cuppetelli & Mendoza, Ghorbel & Mhiri, Hartung|Trenz, joeressen+kessnerand molitor & kuzmin, plus more still to be announced. RESPONSIVE exhibitions will be free to the public and open nightly from 7pm to midnight, October 18 to 21, 2017. Halifax project exhibition sites include Anna Leonowens Gallery, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Dalhousie Arts Centre, Dalhousie School of Architecture and outdoor public spaces at City Hall and the Old Public Library.
