This exhibition celebrates the artistic accomplishments of the young people who participated this past year in the very successful Autism Arts Saturday art classes at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Yarmouth. The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and Autism Nova Scotia have worked in partnership since 2006 with the support of the Craig Foundation to provide a range of visual art experiences for children and youth on the autism spectrum. With additional support the past three years from The Windsor Foundation, this partnership has been expanded to further support the program in Halifax and also offer Autism Arts in Yarmouth.
Autism Arts is a recreational art program. Its intention is to provide a safe and supportive environment for participants to express themselves creatively. An artist works in collaboration with an autism support coordinator to facilitate the program.
Autism Arts: Working Together includes a collaborative mural that shows the strength of group expression. Participants learned to work cooperatively to create one piece of art that holds many individual expressions woven together to build a strong and vibrant whole. In addition, individual pieces are also powerful examples of the voice that visual art gives all of us to speak and to communicate.
Artists Esther Saulnier and Jay LeBlanc worked with the Autism Arts participants to facilitate this art making process.
