Curators: Sarah Fillmore and David Diviney
The multi-faceted practice of Brooklyn-based Canadian duo Chris Hanson and Hendrika Sonnenberg is overviewed in this mid-career survey. Included are works spanning the last twenty-five years of the artists’ production as well as a new animated video work. From their trademark indexical sculptures of everyday objects painstakingly crafted from polystyrene foam to photography, video, animation, and public art, this exhibition examines Hanson and Sonnenberg’s collaborative output and the conundrum of negotiation, conflict, and creativity that is central to their efforts.
A publication will accompany the exhibition, with essays by Irene Tsatsos (Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena), Ben Carlton Turner (New York), Eleanor Heartney (New York), and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s Ray Cronin, Sarah Fillmore, and David Diviney.
