After a comprehensive search process, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s Board of Governors is pleased to announce Sarah Moore Fillmore as the Gallery’s new CEO, effective today, July 14, 2023.

“I am honoured to take on the role as the Gallery’s new CEO,” said Sarah Moore Fillmore. “I love this community, and I am committed to continuing to showcase artists and build meaningful partnerships and programs for Nova Scotians and visitors.”

Since joining the Gallery 18 years ago, Sarah has represented the AGNS on national and international platforms and has established an ambitious vision for the Gallery as a center for artistic excellence and community. As chair of the jury for the Sobey Art Award, she supported emerging Canadian artists and leading curators, and ensured Atlantic Canadian artists had a space on that auspicious stage. Prior to her work in Atlantic Canada, Sarah has led major initiatives in art museums and private galleries in New York and Boston while working with artists from across Canada, the United States, and beyond.

“We are thrilled to see Sarah take on this role permanently,” said Grant Machum, Chair of the Board of Directors. “We had many strong applicants, but it became clear that Sarah is without a doubt, the right leader for this important organization. She has worked tirelessly to bring visibility to all communities, through art, programs and partnerships, and she embodies the passion and community spirit we want to see in the future of the gallery,” said Machum.

Over the years, Sarah has demonstrated her ability to lead change while working to make the Gallery more accessible, relevant, and responsive to the needs of the community. As CEO, she is determined to ensure the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia continues to champion those working to push the boundaries of the artistic profession.

“When I think about the future, I see the Gallery playing an integral role in our society, as a place for important conversations and enhanced health and well-being,” said Moore Fillmore. “The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is at a pivotal moment. I’m thrilled to be part of this next chapter and look forward to collaborating with new and existing partners and community members to elevate arts and culture across Nova Scotia, Canada, and beyond.”
