DISSOLVING BARRIERS FOR YOUNG LEARNERS

Art impacts people in significant and meaningful ways.

Delivering art programs to schools across the province

Last year, classroom workshops like Significant Spaces were a resounding success thanks to support from donors like you.

Marsden Hartley, Stormy Sea 3, 1936.

Not far from New Germany, Nova Scotia, is the small fishing community of Blue Rocks where American modernist painter Marsden Hartley spent an influential period of time in the 1930s. Hartley would develop his paintings from his own sketches and writing.

Drawing inspiration from Hartley’s way of working, ArtsSmarts educator Jason Skinner had the grade 9 art class from New Germany Rural High School do just this as they helped launch the new virtual model of classroom delivery in 2020.

Each student selected a space that held special significance to them. Under Jason’s guidance, they wrote about, sketched, and then painted their scene, just as Marsden Hartley once did on Nova Scotia’s south shore.

At the end of their time together, teacher Kelly Barker and her 23 students were amazed at how the Gallery created such a rewarding virtual experience.

Your gift makes a difference

Support from donors like you has helped turn an unpredictable time into a remarkable success story.

Your donation to the Ambitious Art fund this year will enhance access to art by helping students across the province receive curriculum-connected art programs.

Educational facilitators in Yarmouth and Cape Breton are helping the Gallery dissolve barriers for young learners to access art in rural communities throughout Nova Scotia. Last year, schools in Yarmouth, Digby, Bridgewater, Hubley, Truro, Antigonish, Cape Breton, and many other areas, enrolled in special workshops that brought artists into their classrooms virtually. Each workshop is inspired by work in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s Permanent Collection and offers a unique way to connect art with the everyday.

Make your gift today and support opportunities that connect Nova Scotians with art.
