The Sobey Art Award, established in 2002, is awarded each year to a Canadian artist age 40 or under for outstanding work shown in a gallery within 18 months of being nominated.
The Sobey Art Award is a group exhibition that takes the pulse of contemporary art-making in Canada. This is your chance to see this year’s nominated artists and discover what’s new in Canadian contemporary art.
THE 2011 EXHIBITION INCLUDES:
Zeke Moores (Atlantic) holds the viewer with cast bronze, aluminum, or nickel-plated sculptures that elevate and redefine common, commercially-produced objects familiar to many of our daily experiences.
Manon De Pauw (Québec) examines the language of painting, drawing, photography, dance and performance in her photograms and video installations.
Daniel Young & Christian Giroux (Ontario) have a practice that centers on sculpture and film installations. Their work engages questions about the production of space, the essence of formalism, and the nature of the built environment.
Sarah Anne Johnson (Prairies & the North) combines straight and staged photography in a discourse on topics such as the environment and her family history.
Charles Stankievech (West Coast & Yukon) is a media artist who creates ‘fieldworks’ about the political, technological and environmental forces that connect and shape the North.
