Following World War II the Maritimes experienced an influx of immigrants from continental Europe. Among them were talented craftspeople trained at some of world’s top art schools. When they arrived in Canada they brought with them a new aesthetic sensibility based on European modernism with its streamlined shapes, symbolic designs, and elegant forms. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were amongst the first provinces to enjoy the talents of these European modernists, whose designs in clay led the way for future developments within Canadian ceramics. Maritime Modern highlights works from the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s collection completed by three famous ceramic couples: Krystyna Sadowska and Konrad Sadowski, Erica and Kjeld Deichmann, and Ernst and Alma Lorenzen.
