This exhibition from the Art Gallery’s Permanent Collection consists of twenty-five works by fifteen artists whose work was gifted by the Canada Council’s Art Bank.
These prints display an intersection of ideas – those of landscape, topography, geography, geometry, abstraction, and the domestic environment. Many of the artists in this exhibition chose to work in other artistic media, however, the printed form offered specific tools to convey the ideas they explored. Reverse Wave celebrates the plate or stone, ink, and press used by these skilled professionals, and the outcome are works of sensitivity, exuberance, strength, and sometimes restraint. The printed form relies on the use of a reversed image, drawn, transferred, or etched onto a plate or stone, inked, and then printed.
This exhibition finds its title, Reverse Wave, in the work by James Spencer and speaks at this particular time, to the hopeful reversal in trends in the COVID-19 pandemic. After months of collective isolation and closure, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is pleased to reverse that and open its doors in Yarmouth to the public once again.
