The (Tea)chings space features and celebrates artwork by Indigenous community members of all ages. This spotlight lives within the exhibition Ta’n a’sikatikl sipu’l | Confluence and features new community projects each year.
(Tea)chings currently hosts a collection of paintings that were created by high school students on We’koqma’q First Nation, a Mi’kmaw community in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Through a series of ArtsSmarts workshops, artist Whitney Gould and teacher Alexis Bati inspired each student to create a painting about knowledge they would like to pass down, inspired by the artwork of Daphne Odjig.
ArtsSmarts is a Canada-wide education initiative dedicated to improving the lives and learning capacity of youth by supporting innovative arts-based learning projects in schools. In this province, ArtsSmarts is operated by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia with support from Arts Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
