THE LAST FRONTIER

Human beings share an increasingly precarious co-existence with their natural surroundings. Once regarded as a permanent paradise, the “natural” world has become an elusive last refuge of the wild. The Last Frontier examines the tension between nature, culture, technology, and the built environment through works of art.

Faced with globalization, oil spills, overbuilding and overpopulation, artists have both documented and recreated their environments. Where artists at one time recorded their pristine surroundings, now advances in technology allow for fabrication of that open, infinite universe.

This remarkable installation includes artworks from the Gallery’s Permanent Collection and supplemental loans from other institutions.

The Last Frontier features several renowned artists: Canadians Vikky Alexander, David Askevold, Iain Baxter&, Mark Bovey, Ed Burtynsky, Erik Edson, Holly King, Kelly Richardson, and Tom Sherman, American Alan Sonfist, as well as France-based Isabelle Dehay and duo Scenocosme.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is proud to present The Last Frontier in partnership with the Halifax Regional Municipality and Centre Culturel français|French Embassy in Canada and with support from the Canada Council for the Arts and Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage.
