March Break at the AGNS

Visit the Gallery this March Break to check out new special in-gallery activities! Featuring two guest facilitators, these experiences will add discovery and delight for visitors of all ages. Pick up a self-directed activity, chat with a Tour Guide or draw on a shingle to add to Our Painted Maud house too!

March 11, 14, 16, 18  – Maud Lewis- Cut-out Animation
1:00 – 3:30 pm
Curious about Stop Motion Animation? Stop by the Gallery to discover the fundamentals of animation while creating your own short Maud Lewis animation clip, with the help of artist Tania Fuentes. Using the flat characters, props and backgrounds provided, you can experiment with cut out-animation. Bring Maud’s painted characters to life in this family friendly in-gallery activity!  All materials will be provided, and no registration required.

About Tania Fuentes
Tania Fuentes (she/her) is a visual communication designer and art educator from Mexico City who currently resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She has a bachelor’s degree in Design and Visual Communication from Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM), as well as a master’s degree in Design and Animation from the University of Glasgow. She is currently enrolled in the Art Education graduate program at NSCAD University.

March 12 – Make Day! Cardboard Cities
10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Join us for our all-ages studio drop-in program! This month’s Make Day will be led by Intern Architect Isioma Mafiana., We will build a cardboard city, drawing inspiration from the Shape of Cities exhibition currently on view. Using cardboard, glue, and markers we will work together to create the city of our imaginations!

March 13, 15, 17, 19 – Sketching in the Gallery- Imaginative Illustrations
1:00 – 3:30 pm
Join artist and illustrator Lem Lian to try sketching in the gallery! You’ll be inspired by the artworks in the exhibition to create unique and imaginative illustrations. Use a prompt to get started, or let your imagination run wild!  All materials will be provided, and no registration required.

About Lem Lian
Lem is a multi-award-winning conceptual artist who is originally from China, and now works as a Nova Scotia-based illustrator and art instructor. Her works combine personal history and literature, inspired by East Asian culture as well as psychology and poems. She is currently exploring emotional ways of seeing art with narrative illustration, and enjoys sharing her knowledge and love of art with people, through teaching.

Pick up a colourful, playful activity card at the Welcome Desk. New activities daily to help you make the most of your visit and explore the artworks on view in a new light. Great for all ages.

ASK ME  
Informed and well-trained volunteers are in the Gallery to answer your questions and interpret the artworks with you.

Our Painted House
This drop-in activity is inspired by Maud Lewis’ iconic Painted House. Using a variety of materials, you are invited to create your own artwork shingle to add to the painted house, an almost-to-scale image of Maud’s home.

All activities are included in the price of admission.
